About the project

For more than 30 years, Gilston Electric has provided electrical services and lighting to New York City’s public housing communities. The New York City Housing Authority – the largest public housing program in the nation — relies on Gilston for its exterior lighting projects, as well as interior electrical services. By 2018, more than half of the authority’s 179,000 apartments and 400,000 residents had electrical work provided by Gilston.

In recent years, protocols to improve safety and security led the New York City Housing Authority to call on Gilston to upgrade and expand street lighting for hundreds of thousands of residents in the public housing developments of all five boroughs. Altogether, Gilston has installed $104 million in interior upgrades and exterior lighting for sidewalks, streets, parking lots, playgrounds and other common spaces in the city’s public communities.
